Open a GPX file in Apple Maps

Apple Maps cannot import GPX — there is no “open in Apple Maps” for a .gpx. To see the route on iPhone, use a GPX viewer; to navigate it, send the file to a routing app.

Steps

  1. View the route in a browser. On iPhone, open gpxviewer.app in Safari and choose your .gpx to see it on a map — no app needed.
  2. Or share it into a routing app. In the Files app, touch and hold the .gpx, tap Share, and choose a routing app such as Komoot, WorkOutDoors or OsmAnd.
  3. Navigate from that app. The routing app imports the route and can navigate it — Apple Maps stays out of the loop.

Quirks & limits

  • There is no native GPX import in Apple Maps; this is an Apple limitation, not a problem with your file.
  • Apple’s Fitness app also can’t open a GPX directly — a workout app is needed.
