Open a GPX file in Strava
Strava accepts GPX directly. Uploading a GPX as an activity (it joins your feed with its recorded date) and building a route (a planned line to follow) are two different flows — pick the one you actually want.

Free tierFree accounts can upload activities and build routes.
Steps
- Sign in to Strava on the web. Go to strava.com and log in (uploading a file is easiest on the website).
- Open the upload menu. Click the “+” (Add) control in the top navigation and choose to upload a file.
- Choose your GPX file. Select “Choose files” and pick your .gpx.
- Review and save. Check the detected sport, title and date, then save. The track is added as an activity.
Quirks & limits
- Uploading a GPX creates an activity dated to the file’s timestamps — not a planned route. Use Strava’s Route Builder if you want a route to follow.
- A GPX with no timestamps may be rejected or dated oddly; add times or upload it as a route reference instead.
See the route before you upload it
Not sure the file is the right one? Drop it into the viewer first — you'll see the full track on a map with distance, elevation and speed. Nothing is uploaded.
Frequently asked questions
Does Strava accept GPX files?
Yes. Strava imports GPX (as well as FIT and TCX). The website’s upload flow adds the GPX as an activity in your feed.
Why did my GPX upload with the wrong date?
Strava dates an uploaded activity from the timestamps inside the GPX. If the file has no or incorrect times, the activity date follows them.
