Open a GPX file in Google Maps

Google Maps can’t open a GPX directly. The route is to convert the GPX to KML or KMZ, import it into Google My Maps, and then view that custom map in Google Maps under your saved maps.

Steps

  1. Export your track as KML or KMZ. In the GPX viewer, open the Download menu and export KML (or KMZ). No other software needed.
  2. Open Google My Maps. Go to google.com/mymaps, sign in, and create a new map.
  3. Import the KML/KMZ. In the map layer, choose “Import” and upload the KML/KMZ file.
  4. View it in Google Maps. The track appears as a custom map. Open it in the Google Maps app or site under Saved → Maps (Your places → Maps).

Quirks & limits

  • A My Maps layer is a drawing, not a navigable route — Google Maps won’t give turn-by-turn directions along it.
  • My Maps has import size and feature limits; very large tracks may need simplifying.
